GrepBeat’s “Startups To Watch” recognizes early-stage startups that we believe are going to make a lot of noise over the next several years. We reveal the list of 10 honorees at an invite-only event.

The inaugural “Startups To Watch” event took place on Sept. 23, 2021, at The Pit in downtown Durham. The evening was sponsored by Hutchison and Dualboot.

The requirements to qualify for the list are that the startups must be:

  • Tech or tech-enabled startups. Thus no agencies or consultancies; and no life sciences, biotech, or medical device startups.
  • Less than $5M in annual revenue.

We solicit nominations for the list from the GrepBeat community. In 2021, we received 88 total nominations for 71 different startups.

Here are the full results for 2021. Note that we also honored three additional startups in what we called “Startups (To Watch)2″ or “Startups To Watch, To Watch.” This category recognized some very early-stage startups—less than a year old—that showed great promise, but weren’t quite mature enough to compare apples-to-apples with the others.

We look forward to the 2022 “Startups To Watch” list!
