The Friday Nooner: We Get Meta With Eva Doss (The Launch Place)

The gang’s all here this week! In this episode, Pete, Joe and WRAL TechWire’s Chantal Allam—who is our guest co-host for October— talk about Facebook rebranding to “Meta” and the future of gaming.

Our featured guest is Eva Doss, president and CEO of The Launch Place. The Launch Place is a venture development organization that provides startups with mentoring, training and consulting services. And, of course, funding.

Here are some highlights from this episode:

  • Pete and Joe start the show by showing off our new GrepBeat quarter-zips. As it gets colder, these will work great for outdoor happy hours. However, you can’t wear white underneath—there’s a 99% chance red fluff will get all over you. (At least until we wash and dry them a few times.) The pair continued by discussing Facebook’s recent rebranding to Meta, which points toward its big plans in the metaverse.
  • Chantal joined the conversation shortly after. They dived into the popularity of gaming among tweens and the reasoning behind why Facebook is ‘doubling down’ on VR. Chantal also questions what regulations will put into place for children’s safety in the coming metaverse.
  • Eva joins the stream around the halfway mark. The Launch Place—which is headquartered in Danville, Va., but also has an office in RTP—has invested in a number of Triangle startups, such as Roobrik and mesur.io. Eva talks about their Seed Fund requirements and how the organization got involved in the Triangle startup space. She mentioned their recent Big Launch Challenge, as well as their upcoming IdeaFest Business Pitch competition in the spring.
